Relationship Economics® Newsletter

March 2008

When was the last time you put your heart, soul, blood, sweat, tears, hours, resources, and unfortunately, sacrificed family time into something – anything?

My grandfather, whom we fondly used to call "Bubba Hamrah" was a highly eccentric city mayor, newspaper publisher, global traveler, and yes, even an apothecary. He had a genuine passion for the written word as evident by his 25 published books. He would hear a short story, punch it up, and write about it. He would read something interesting, reflect on it based on his own life experiences, and write about it. He was as witty as he was charming, wooing my grandmother for over 70 years.

Baba Hamrah passed away recently. I think in many ways, I have also been affected by his passion for writing. And I can’t describe the huge weight that was lifted from me when I turned over the draft manuscript of my first book, Relationship Economics, to my publisher, Wiley, this past month. It is expected to hit shelves on Friday, August 29, 2008. I hope it will be worthy of Baba Hamrah’s pride.

How Mission Critical is Your Social Network?

You won’t believe this one. I recently logged into LinkedIn and it actually gave me the following alert: LinkedIn is currently unavailable while we make upgrades.

What?! Hello?! I was simply distraught. I was in Dubai, preparing for a meeting with a senior vice president with whom I had scheduled the meeting through LinkedIn, and I desperately needed access to his profile. What now – I can’t show up blindly!

As technologies such as e-mail and the use of Blackberry devises has become so prevalent in our lives, any disruption to that comfort zone is met with a sense of panic. Most of us cannot imagine going through the day without e-mailing or texting someone, 4CLO (for crying out loud). This begs the question, How mission critical is your social network? What critical piece of information instrumental to your personal and professional success would you need just in time, so that if the social link or connection were disrupted, it would cause irreparable damage?

Do Your Employees Feel Engaged?

Do your employees have a sense of the bigger picture?

There is a Persian story that goes something like this: A group of villagers is weaving a basket together. A wise man walks by and asks them what they are doing. The first says, “I am pushing one straw against another.” The second says, “I am making a basket.” The third answers, “I’m helping a father carry food to feed his family.”

Though they were all three working on the same project, they each saw their jobs very differently. How do your employees see their jobs? Is it as the same mundane pushing of one woven strip of straw against another, or do they see a little bigger than that – which is the basket itself – or do they see a purpose for why they are doing what they are doing?

Relationship Currency Friday Lunch

Years ago we started this idea of getting interesting people who may have heard a Relationship Economics speech or attended a training class together once a month for a "Relationship Currency Lunch".  Well - by popular demand, it's back.  Stay tuned for more info on a Friday Lunch coming to your city.

Please Add Value, Not Noise!

Have you noticed that some meetings go much longer than they ever should? Do you ever wonder that there is a perception that everyone must speak? I often wonder, Do some of these people feel that if they say nothing, they are not contributing, and that somehow, sitting in active silence is a sin punishable by death?

Say the topic of discussion is a marketing campaign. An employee can think of no legitimate criticism or valuable suggestion for improvement, so instead of saying nothing at all, he digs up an objection based on a single incident that occurred years ago at another job in a different company and sometimes, you think, on a different planet.
