Social Networking Directory

If you’re new here, you may want to subscribe to our RSS feed. Or, join our email list and get a free audio gift. Thanks for visiting!

Judith Meskill, a few years ago put together this really cool and probably the most comprehensive meta list of Social Networking applications on their social software blog.  As with any new market there are, and will continue to be, attrition in the market due to various factors such as missed critical assumptions, lack of resources – especially capital, and certainly lack of a perceived unique and value-based offering to attract and retain a critical mass of users and loyal fans.

Through our extensive research of the social networking space, we’ll work diligently to keep this list updated.  Please feel free to contribute updates you may know of or uncover to the comments on this blog entry as well.

Happy 2008,

David

These social networking categories are: business; common interest; dating; face-to-face facilitation; friends; MoSoSo (Mobile Social Software); pets; photos; and ‘edge’ cases or social networking ‘plus’ sites.

The mostly recently added services are marked with an *. Please keep submitting your comments, links, and recommendations for additions and deletions. This list now stands at 380 entries. Thanks… (:=

The Strategic Value of Your Business Relationships

Here’s a new video that is part of the “Connecting the Dots” Series. Do not miss any upcoming videos by subscribing to our RSS feed. And, join our email list and get a free audio gift.

What is your impression of networking? To many, it’s an insincere trade of favors or, at best, an elegant way of using people to get what you want. I actually asked this question of a group of PhD students at a Top 5 engineering school and one student near the front asked, “You mean, with other people?”

Conversely, what’s your impression of relationships? When talking about relationships, most use characteristics such as trust, depth, and vested interest. So, if relationships have been around since the Ice Ages and we all know what they are, why is it that we’re becoming increasingly disconnected? In many ways, we’re losing our ability to touch people!

The 7Ms of Entrepreneurial Success - Video

Here’s a new video that is part of the Connecting the Dots Series. Be sure to subscribe to my RSS feed or, join our email list to get notices when new videos are posted. The transcription from the video follows.

In my 20 years of working with large enterprises and leading early-stage ventures, I’ve found one characteristic that all entrepreneurs have in common: a big idea. What separates the dreamers from the successful business leaders is their ability to execute on that idea and convince others that it’s an idea worth investing in. Entrepreneurs all face similar challenges when it comes to recruiting and retaining top talent, and acquiring customers and strategic suppliers. But before convincing others to invest in the venture with their time, services, or financial backing, there are some critical points that the entrepreneur must be prepared to address.

Please Stand For Something

Here’s a short video that is part of the Connecting the Dots Series. Be sure to subscribe to my RSS feed or, join our email list to get notices when new videos are posted. The transcription from the video follows.

In his bestseller, Winning, Jack Welch says that there is not enough candor in corporate America today. I would submit that there is also very little stand. We’re so conscious not to offend, not to polarize, not to leave anyone out, not to discriminate, and not to differentiate, that many often go through a day, week, month, year, or lifetime without saying anything. If you don’t stand for something, what do you believe in? What is it at your core, which you are so fundamentally passionate about, that you are willing to sacrifice? In examining over 1,000 Match.com ads, brothers Dan and Chip Heath, authors of Made to Stick (Random House, 2007), made an amazing discovery. Their research yielded clever headlines to personal ads such as, “Hey” – If that’s your opening line, you better be hot, and “Looking for Love” – well, duh! You’re on Match.com! But even more striking was that well over 600 of headlines simply said nothing.

21-30 Year Old Workers Are Least Satisfied!

According to a new study by Leadership IQ, the youngest workers are the least satisfied. Only 30% of workers ages 21-30 would strongly recommend their organization as a good place to work.

By contrast, 47% of workers ages 61-70 would strongly recommend their organization as a good place to work, making them the most satisfied age group.

Entrepreneurial Holiday Wish List

Saw this from Tim Fulton, a Vistage Chair here in Atlanta and thought it may be of interest to you… Best, David

I know that many of you have yet to complete your own holiday wish list and I would like to provide several suggestions. Here we go:

1. A portrait of your best customer. This would hang right behind your desk to remind you and your followers why you are in business. Having a hard time making a tough business decision? Just turn around and consult the picture. What’s in their best interest? Trying to make a difficult hiring decision? Would you want this applicant spending considerable time with this customer?

2. A Greyhound Bus miniature. My wife gave me a little red sports car miniature several years ago because she said she could not afford to give me the real thing. Why a bus? Just a reminder of author Jim Collin’s (Good To Great) suggestion of your role as the bus driver in your company. As the bus driver you must make very important personnel decisions. It is your job to decide who gets on your bus (should you hire them?) and where they are to sit (which job?). You must also decide who needs to get off the bus.
